GRN/USSSA Article on the Bronx Bombers

The Bronx BOMBERS!!!

Center Moriches, NY:  They have a way about them. The entire team beginning with the manager, Eric Semler, all the way down to the bat boy, has a certain way about them that can be noticed as soon as they arrive to the complex. The Bombers arrived at the Moriches Complex in Center Moriches from the Bronx early Saturday morning and immediately conducted their business.  They began their practice, a clean, crisp and so organized in a way that you can just tell from the player’s body language that they mean business.  They are an intimidating team, but that is just from the sheer size of them. They are a classy group, beginning with the manager and all the way down to the fans.

The first game was against the Smithtown/St. James Bulls. The Bulls just came off a tough 2-1 loss in extra innings in a game that produced only a few hits. The cold weather combined with great pitching and defense led both teams (Island Trees) into extra innings. So, it was clear that the day would produce low scoring, close games. This was not the case with the Bombers, as they scored (10) runs in the top of the first inning without an out. After defeating the Bulls by the mercy rule (15-0) in (2) innings, the Bombers then faced Island Trees to complete pool play for the day. They only needed (2) innings again as the Bombers defeated Island Trees (17-1).

The Bombers finished as the #1 seed in Pool A and received a first round bye in the playoffs. The first opponent on Sunday was the feisty 11u team, The LI Mudcats.  It was concluded by Cablevision that a game versus the 11u Mudcats could jeopardize the overall production that included several innings of sponsors commercials,  since it was a forgone conclusion that the Bombers would finish off another opponent in (2) innings. The Mudcats are a great team, but they are in a lower age division. They really had no chance against a team that just finished a 14u tournament the week prior at Baseball Heaven and WON it, then began this tournament by outscoring their opponents 32-0 in (4) innings.

The dilemma was presented to the often confident manager of the Mudcats, Mike Mckenna, who informed us that they are not intimidated at all and assured us that the game will be competitive.  The Mudcats backed up the words from their coach and came right out of the gate s hitting. They rolled off (5) runs in the first inning and had the Bombers in a position that they were unaccustomed to.  It was a very confident and impressive Mudcat team that turned a few heads today.  It is a known fact, just by their record alone, that the Mudcats are a very good team, but going toe-to-toe with a team like the bombers sent them to another level that some should take notice

After a few scoreless innings, the Bombers then began to hit and eventually took the lead.  The game finished with the Bombers on top, (11-5), with many of the final runs coning at the latter part of the game.

The championship game, televised on Cablevision, had the Bombers going against the NY Jays. The Jays, led by Wilson Acosta, are one of the top 12u teams in the region.  They are a class A organization and one of the best we have seen in USSSA. This was the game we were all looking forward to as the Jays defeated the Bombers earlier in the season (3-2) and were poised to take the championship game as well.

The Bombers got hot early and rode the back of their ace, Jonathan Fonseca, and rolled off an (7-0) victory that saw Fonseca throw a no-hitter. Fonseca, the tournament MVP, was on another level on this night as he struck out (10+) Jays. A truly remarkable performance from a player with unlimited potential

The tournament victory earned the Bombers a berth to the 2013 USSSA 12u World series at Disney. As this was just another notch on this team’s belt, the victory here in USSSA was very impressive and they will represent our region well. USSSA NY is poised to send more teams to Florida and we are confident that more teams, especially with the impressive group of teams we saw this weekend, will follow an elite team and one of the best teams we have ever seen, the Bronx Bombers.
